Web standards: understand what will change with the new W3C decisions
In fact, the internet is constantly changing. But, since its founding in 1994, the W3C (Worldwide Web Consortium) has not indicated the need for such radical changes to web standards.
This is because the web standards body, responsible for shaping codes such as: HTML, privacy, among others, defined the new way in which it will operate.
According to the statement issued by the institution, from January 2023, the W3C will transform into a non-profit organization of public interest.
In this way, increasing flexibility and agility in decision-making to meet high demands.
Despite not offering many changes in practice, the decision has caused some discomfort among technology giants.

Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) and web standards
Nowadays, it's easy to turn to Google to get all the information about HTML standards and internet privacy terms, but many don't know the origin of these standards.
As we saw before, the institution founded in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee, had as its mission the creation of open protocols and guidelines.
In this way, it guides the continuous advancement of the internet and, thus, also addresses privacy standards on the web.
Currently, the W3C is a “hosted model”, that is, a web standards body that has headquarters in countries such as: the United States, France, China and Japan.
However, given the high demand for innovation, he decided that the best path would be to transition to the “non-profit model”. Thus, being able to offer solutions to current demands quickly and efficiently.
According to W3C official announcement, it was possible to note that the model adopted, since its foundation, prevented the continued evolution of the institution.
“We need a structure where we can more quickly meet demands for new web features and address pressing issues.
The W3C team is small, limited in size, and the Hosted model makes it difficult to quickly develop and acquire skills in new fields.
We need to put governance at the center of the new organization for clearer reporting, accountability, greater diversity and strategic direction, and better global coordination.

What could change with this change?
Certainly, the participation of technology giants among the new changes was a fact. Among those responsible for support are:
- Microsoft;
- Brave;
- Google;
- Among others.
Therefore, although they are undergoing a radical change of structure, the W3C made it very clear in its statement that decision-making will remain the same.
In this way, following the same processes that it currently establishes. But, you may be asking yourself: “so why make this change?”
The main change is the institution’s chance of growth. As a result, they seek new forms of expansion, a fact that was not possible while maintaining the governance standards that had been applied since its foundation in 1994.
In this way, they aim to prepare themselves to meet the demands of the future and mature the processes for defining new web standards.
“Our standards work will still be carried out openly, under the W3C Process Paper and the royalty-free W3C Patent Policy, with broader contributions from the community. Technical direction and recommendations will continue to require review by W3C members – large and small.”
Official statement W3C (Worldwide Web Consortium)
As we have seen, the changes only concern the original structure of the body, thus maintaining the same transparent processes that we see today.
Therefore, no matter how much changes, as long as you conduct open processes and make decisions in a way that listens to all stakeholders, clarity should help you make fairer and more efficient decisions.
